Ja, we hebben het over Royal Dutch Shell! Die multinational die jouw portemonnee elke week iets lichter maakt, maar je ook gelukkig maakt met die heerlijke geur van vers gebakken&#8230; euh, benzine? In dit artikel duiken we in de wondere wereld van \u00e9\u00e9n van de grootste bedrijven ter wereld. Van their oer-Hollandse roots tot hun imperium dat zich uitstrekt over de hele globe. Pak een bak koffie (of een Shell-bluetooth beker met korting) en lees mee!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>1. Die schelp is niet zomaar een schelp<\/h2>\n<p>Je zou denken dat het logo gewoon een mooie schelp is, maar nee hoor! De beroemde &#8220;Pecten maximus&#8221; (ja, hij heeft een echte naam) werd in 1904 gekozen omdat de oprichters vonden dat het makkelijk te onthouden was. Tegenwoordig herkent zelfs uw opa het logo vanuit de ruimte. Wel zo handig voor die buitenaardse wezens die ook even snel willen tanken.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Twee vaders, \u00e9\u00e9n baby<\/h2>\n<p>Shell is eigenlijk een Nederlandse en Engelse liefdesbaby uit 1907. Jean Kessler en Marcus Samuel besloten hun bedrijven te fusioneren, waarschijnlijk na een paar te veel pilsjes in een cafe in Londen. Sindsdien is het bedrijf half Nederlands, half Engels &#8211; net als Brexit, maar dan met meer olie en minder gedoe.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Ze tanken hun eigen personeel<\/h2>\n<p>Wist je dat Shell-medewerkers korting krijgen op hun eigen brandstof? Dat is toch de ultieme vorm van bedrijfstrots! &#8220;Werk bij ons en krijg 10% korting op de brandstof die je nodig hebt om naar ons toe te rijden!&#8221; Het cirkeltje is echt rond.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Vroeger heette het niet eens Shell<\/h2>\n<p>Voordat het bedrijf een schelp als logo kreeg, heette het gewoon &#8220;Marcus Samuel &#038; Co&#8221;. Dat klinkt meer als een advocatenkantoor dan als een oliegigant. Gelukkig hebben ze die naam snel veranderd, anders hadden we nu gezegd: &#8220;Ik ga even Samuel &#038; Co-en voor benzine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>5. De eerste drive-through ter wereld<\/h2>\n<p>Ok\u00e9, dit is niet helemaal waar, maar Shell was wel een van de eerste bedrijven die het gemak van &#8220;bijtanken zonder de auto te verlaten&#8221; introduceerde. In 1913 openden ze hun eerste echte tankstation in Seattle. Sindsdien kunnen we allemaal lui blijven zitten in onze auto terwijl iemand anders onze brandstoftank vult. Bedankt, Shell!<\/p>\n<h2>6. Ze hebben hun eigen munteenheid<\/h2>\n<p>Niet echt, maar met hun overstap naar dollars als belangrijkste valuta voelde het wel even zo. In 2005 besloten ze hun hoofdkantoor te verplaatsen naar Den Haag en Londen, en sindsdien rekenen ze af in dollars. Nederlandse gulden? Engelse ponden? Nee hoor, graag dollars!<\/p>\n<h2>7. Zonne-energie? Ja, echt!<\/h2>\n<p>Ja, je leest het goed. Shell is bezig met hernieuwbare energie. Ze investeren in zonne- en windenergie, alsof ze ineens besloten: &#8220;We hebben genoeg olie, laten we de planeet nu ook een beetje redden.&#8221; Een mooie gedachte, toch? Of ze zien gewoon een nieuwe markt om te domineren.<\/p>\n<h2>8. De wereldwijde puzzel<\/h2>\n<p>Shell heeft meer dan 80.000 medewerkers in meer dan 70 landen. Dat is meer mensen dan in een klein stadje! Stel je voor: 80.000 mensen die elke dag opstaan met \u00e9\u00e9n doel: zorgen dat jij met een volle tank naar je werk kunt rijden. Dat is toch prachtig?<\/p>\n<h2>9. Ze vonden al in 1947 olie in de Noordzee<\/h2>\n<p>Terwijl de rest van Europa nog aan het herstellen was van de oorlog, was Shell al druk bezig met het boren naar olie in de Noordzee. Resultaat: een van de grootste olievondsten in Europa. Toen al wisten ze: de toekomst is vet!<\/p>\n<h2>10. De gratis koffie is het beste marketingtrucje ooit<\/h2>\n<p>Laten we eerlijk zijn: de enige reden dat we naar Shell gaan in plaats van naar die andere goedkopere pomp, is die gratis koffie voor Card Holders. Een kopje troost terwijl je kijkt hoe je bankrekening leegloopt. Marketingwijsheid pur sang!<\/p>\n<p>En zo hebben we tien leuke feitjes over Royal Dutch Shell. Of je nu fan bent van hun brandstof of niet, je kunt niet ontkennen dat ze een indrukwekkend bedrijf zijn met een rijke geschiedenis. Van een kleine handel in schelpen tot een wereldwijde oliegigant die de wereld draaiende houdt (soms letterlijk). De volgende keer dat je bij de pomp staat, denk dan even aan dit artikel en glimlach terwijl je betaalt.
